The History of West Lakes Golf Club
The West Lakes Golf Club was born from humble beginnings in 1951 and has a strong heritage of loyal members supporting their Boards over the years to build the course into what you see today.
With funds low voluntary labour played an important part throughout the 1950’s and 1960’s with members working alongside the greenkeepers, captains and alike. Working bees were held every weekend 1951 to have a course in operations with the first round of Championships played in 1952. The great all year-round Golf Course we have today is now thankfully maintained by our experienced Superintendent and his team to provide a challenging and beautifully conditioned 18-hole golf course.
With progress over the decades on the Course a much-needed upgrade to the Clubhouse (an old railway caboose) was needed. A special meeting resolved, apprehensively, to embark on the first stages of a new Clubhouse. The many stages began with the addition of showers, lockers and toilets. A more integrated establishment with a bar, lounge, dining room and offices coming to a completion 1975. Since that time, there have been refurbishments to the bar, the offices have been relocated within the building and in 1995 the dining room atrium was added, creating a popular location with a stunning vista for functions.
